Madagascar - Madagascar country information, fascinating flora & fauna, attractions and general information for planning your holiday to Madagascar.Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, situated off the south-east coast of Africa. Offering unique flora, fauna and animal species including Lemurs and pristine beaches, Madagascar provides unforgettable family holidays and romantic honeymoons. The island extends 1,000 miles in length and 360 miles at its largest width. Madagascar is famous for pepper, vanilla and of course the lemurs. The main languages spoken are Malagasy and French. From eco-safaris to luxury honeymoons or family getaways, this island is the perfect setting for a tailor-made adventure. Madagascar is a malaria area so please consult your doctor or travel clinic at least 6 weeks prior to traveling. The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo which is often shortened to 'Tananarive' or 'Tana' by the locals.
Lemurs are the most famous animal unique to Madagascar and there are about 50 different types. Other exotic creatures include Dwarf Chameleons, Giant Jumping Rats and Tomato Frogs. The beaches in Madagascar are un-crowded and a major attraction for divers and sunbathers. The best way to travel in Madagascar is by air due to the poor state of the roads. The national airline serves numerous destinations throughout the country. Car Hire is available and we would recommend hiring a 4x4 vehicle if you insist on risking the roads. There are two good roads leading out of Tana but you will find that traveling by car in Madagascar will almost always take much more time than you would normally expect. The roads are being improved of late but it could take some time before this is of a standard that we would advise it to be practical. There are three rail lines in Madagascar but these are unreliable due to poor maintenance and a line could be closed for several weeks. Madagascar is a fairly safe country to travel in. Common sense is always recommended when traveling to Africa such as not being flashy with money or valuables or walking around the cities at night. If you are flexible and looking for the unexpected, if you want to meet an extraordinary people, then go and discover this fascinating island!
