Teacher Volunteering at Knysna Elephant Park

Teacher Volunteering at Knysna Elephant Park

We are looking for dedicated, hard working, mature and motivated teaching volunteers that care!  Volunteers should be of good health and physical fitness.

Volunteer Positions Available:
1) Educational support Volunteers:
The main requirement of the Knysna Elephant Park Volunteer Program is in a teaching capacity dealing specifically with Alcohol Fetal Syndrome children.  These applicants will be given priority as this is a severe problem in the area and special teachers are required to provide the necessary assistance and caring.
2) Photography Volunteers:
This includes video and still photography of tours taken by tourists. An editing suite in the curio shop will provide the challenge of preparing the photographs and videos.

Proceeds from the sales of these photographs and videos will go toward the school project. Clear objectives will be set to achieve these projects.

The Knysna Elephant Park volunteer program aims to develop a meaningful volunteer program that will make a difference to the African elephants, full time staff, the Knysna community and add value to the skills of local people working at the Park.

Whilst there will be no hands on working with the elephants, various projects will bring you into the vicinity of our gentle giants. The elephants will be under the constant care of our trained elephant guides but your free time you are most welcome to spent with the elephants to learn and listen to the heartwarming stories of the guides.

You must be a minimum of 18 years old and be available for at least 2 months.

A few frequently asked questions:
1. Where does the money go that I as a volunteer have to pay?
The money paid by you will be well spent. Part of the money will be used for your food and accommodation, part of the money will be used to uplift the Knysna Elephant Park, its elephants and the people working here and the rest will be used to support projects in the Knysna community. We have adopted a local underprivileged school and through the volunteer program we can provide them with their critical needs.

2. Is food and accommodation included?
Yes, food and accommodation is included. Breakfast and lunch will be available at all times and it is up to you to prepare for your self, dinner will be catered by us. However, when there are only 2 or 3 volunteers you might be asked to prepare dinner as a group. The volunteers are responsible for cleaning up their own dishes. The accommodation is our former guest bunkhouse accommodation and is on the park itself.

3. Do I have to share a room, toilet and shower?
Yes, you will be sharing a room, toilet and shower with the other volunteers. The toilets and showers are just a few steps away from your room and are defined in gents and ladies.

4. What are the working hours?
The working hours vary per volunteer position but your day will start as early as 07:30 and finishes at 17:30. We do have special functions and you might be asked to help, this is when your working day finishes later. All the volunteer positions require a 5 day working week.
