Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and is situated near the centre of the country at approximately 2500 metres. This makes it the world's third highest capital.
Addis Ababa means 'New Flower' and it has wide avenues of Jacaranda trees with numerous historical and archaeological sites.
Some of the places of interest in Addis Ababa include Menelik II Mausoleum, Mount Entoto, 'Merkato' - the biggest open air market in East Africa (check with locals before you go as there have been clashes reported in this area), the octagonal Church of St George (try to attend a service), the Great Mosque, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, National Palace etc, etc.
Many poor Ethiopians from the rural areas are found begging in the streets of Addis Ababa.
