Simien Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a number of extremely rare animal species including the Lammergeyer, Ethiopian wolf, Gelada Baboon and the Walia Ibex.
Access to the park is through the town of Debark and it is compulsory to have an armed ranger and guide with you in the park - more to provide employment than due to any risks.
There are more than 50 species of bird inhabiting the park including the rare Lammergeyer or the Bearded Vulture with its 3m wingspan.
The Simien Mountains provide excellent trekking and the highest point in Ethiopia (Ras Dejen/Ras Dashen is 4,620m) and the fourth highest peak in Africa. Snow and ice appear on the higher peaks and night temperatures can fall below zero.
Gondar is the gateway town to the Simien Mountains National Park which is about 110km's north and is famed for its medieval castles. It is one of Ethiopia's largest cities.
