Sossusvlei Desert Reserve:Thought to be one of the oldest deserts in existence, the Namib Desert is also one of the driest and most pristine regions on earth. The harsh environmental conditions have led to the evolution of numerous plant and animal species that are specially adapted to survive in the desert. In some parts of the Namib, the regular fog flowing in from the Atlantic Ocean condenses to sustain plants such as multi-colored lichens and provide sufficient drinking water for some animal life. Vegetation in the Namib consists mainly of plants that can survive extended arid periods as seeds in order to flourish after rainfall.
The famous dunes of Sossusvlei have a reputation for being among the highest in the world and excursions to this spectacular spot are organized from the Lodge. Rising skywards around a shallow depression (the ‘vlei’), the dunes tower to heights of up to 200 meters (660 feet). The valley itself is lined with huge camel thorn trees, which provide refuge to many small creatures. Although it rarely occurs, in years of extreme rainfall, the Sossusvlei depression may fill up with water, creating a magical kaleidoscope of colour as the surrounding dunes and gnarled trees reflect in the surface of the pool.

Cradled against ancient mountains, looking out onto a broad rocky plain that rises towards distant dunes of fiery sand, Sossusvlei Desert Lodge boasts a location that is at once dramatic and serene. Fantastically formed rock formations vie for attention with massive sand dunes as the shifting rays of the sun bring the landscape to life. With just ten villas constructed of stone and glass, guests can enjoy the solitary splendor of this remote landscape in privacy. Suites are air conditioned against the searing heat of day and cozy fireplaces ward off the chill of winter nights.
Elements of bone, slate and stone create a dramatic, yet entirely natural, look, while rough timber-work, twiggy chandeliers and wooden sculptures call to mind the craggy mountains. Massive windows in the split-level bedroom and sitting room, as well as the en-suite bathroom, open onto the wide plains where you can’t help but lose yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the desert from the comfort of your private veranda. The dusky pink colours of the natural rose quartz that Namibia is known for provide a fresh contrast to the creams and greys of the interiors.
Guest areas flow into vast desert views, as the stone and glass structure of the Lodge melts into wraparound verandas. Cool water gushes from an underground spring into the refreshing lodge pool, while an extensive walk-in wine cellar provides refreshment of a different sort. Mouth watering dinners are served by lantern light on the open dining deck or in a surprise location in the nearby dunes. When night falls, our resident astronomer reveals the mysteries of the stars in our state of the art observatory.
