Swakopmund is Namibia’s second largest town and is wedged between the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean. This town is a favourite sea-side holiday destination with the locals as it provides a welcome respite to the heat of the interior.
Its old world charm resembles a Bavarian village, right down to the shops, restaurants and hotels. Its German Colonial buildings have been restored and some of them turned into museums and it almost feels like you are stuck in time.
You are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining as there are several restaurants that offer fantastic food. Swakopmund is most famous for its German bakeries serving traditional German cakes and pastries.
One of the town’s most prominent landmarks is the Swakopmund Lighthouse which was completed in 1903.
Due to its position, there are lots of activities nearby such as quad biking in the dunes, sand boarding, hot air ballooning, fishing, scenic flights to view shipwrecks along the coast and the famous dunes, desert safaris, surfing etc.
